Location
EL 3007 covers ~1,102 km² over the whole St Matthias Group — Mussau, Emirau and the intervening seabed — 175 km north-west of Kavieng, with an airstrip on Eloaua 4 km south. This is the least subsurface-tested ground in the portfolio.
Why we think it’s prospective
Our reinterpretation overturns the regional model every prior operator used. Mussau was explored as the northern end of the Tabar–Lihir–Feni chain, but its float is silica-oversaturated at every level — vein quartz, chalcedony, jasperoid, silicified rhyolite — which cannot come from that suite. The mineralised clasts sit in a Pliocene conglomerate interbedded with the basal limestone, so the epithermal system was standing and eroding when the reef began to grow, and then drowned. The source is local, and beneath the cap.
The last operator (BHP, 1988) mapped and drew a buried mineralised volcanic core under the limestone, then relinquished on the gold price. The reef that beat three campaigns is a lid, not a failure — and it is transparent to the two instruments never used here: magnetics and gravity.
Historical data, in summary
Three campaigns worked the ground (Kennecott, BHP–Auralia and Auralia, 1984–1989), all surface only: roughly 130 rock chips, 150 stream sediments and 100 pans — and zero holes and zero geophysical lines. A modern spectral interpretation identifies 27 targets (12 priority-one).
